This is an excerpt from The Tantrum Solution:

The proven effectiveness of the Tantrum Solution was made possible with the help of three volunteer parents who kept a record, on a standard form that I provided, of each of their 7-year-old sons’ tantrums and how long the tantrum lasted.

The parents then kept a record of the occurrence and duration of each tantrum after they simply disconnected (walked away and ignored the tantrum). In the third treatment phase, a record of tantrum frequency and duration was kept after the parents learned how to administer the Tantrum Solution. All three of these boys had multiple daily tantrums, some of which were intense and lasted well over twenty minutes. The amount of daily time that each child devoted to tantrum behavior was calculated as a behavioral rate.

For the first ten days, I asked the mothers to do nothing other than what they had always done when a tantrum occurred. The next ten days the mothers were instructed to “Disconnect”. It can be seen in the graph that after the Disconnect, the tantrums decreased for two of the three boys, but the tantrums were not eliminated. After ten days of disconnecting, the mothers initiated the Tantrum Solution. Viewing the graphs, it can be seen that time spent in tantrum dropped to zero for three days after the intervention for Child 1; zero for two days after the intervention for Child 2; and tantrums zeroed out for six days following the intervention for Child 3. Then each child demonstrated what is called an “extinction burst”. Each child’s extinction burst represents a last-ditch effort to tantrum and for one child, it was a doozy. After that, each child dropped their tantrum behavior to zero occurrence. The children had learned to calm themselves by thinking about not wanting to be controlled by the tantrum monster. Their brain literally stopped triggering tantrums. This works!
